Racing Pigeon Loft is totally different from lofts for non-racing types. While lofts for ordinary pigeons are designed just like racing pigeon lofts, the latter must have a bigger space to allow the pigeons more space.

  1. Purpose of Racing Pigeon Lofts

You racing pigeon loft must have at least three sections; one for cocks, one for hens and one for the youngsters. The reason for this is quite simple, the pigeons will try to mate and breed whenever possible, so to prevent this, and the cocks must be separated from the hens once in a while.

It is also ideal a separate loft for sick and weak pigeons, this is to make sure that they will not infect the other birds just in cane they are carrying any diseases. The dividers can be installed easily; you just need a basic wall that will divide your loft. It do not need to be a very sturdy division, just strong enough to eb able to support a door that you can go through and close behind you.

They need to be big enough so the pigeons can fly out easily for their daily exercises.

They need to be big enough so the pigeons can return safely after a toss or a race.

They need to be comfortable enough to raise the young birds.

They need to have enough space for nesting and mating.

Aviaries are great additions to pigeon lofts, though many do not think it is necessary to have them, it is actually essential for the training exercises of the racing pigeons.

An aviary give the birds a good place where they can exercise under the sun; it gives them freedom to move and exercise on their especially when you are not around to take them out. This is also a good place fro the youngsters to get used to their new surroundings.

Construction of an aviary need not be so complicated, if you do not have the budget for the sophisticated type, you can just make one out of plywood; just erect a wooden framework, attach fine chicken wire around it, and you are done.

  1. Reasons why You Need to keep your Racing Pigeon Lofts Clean

The condition and cleanliness of your racing pigeon loft is vital to your birds just like the cleanliness and condition of your home is to you, maybe even more. The reason for this is that racing pigeons are more vulnerable to many illness and diseases than humans; hey can easily get sick when exposed to dirty or wet loft. Some illnesses are very fatal and will affect the speed of the pigeons.

There are also some bird conditions that transfer to human, and they are very risky and may cause death.

So, always make sure that your loft is thoroughly clean; birds rest better when they can settle on on clean floors and clean perches. Always make sure that the floor and other areas are completely dry after you have cleaned the loft; and do the wet cleaning when the birds a re out, allow the floor to dry out completely before allowing the birds to get inside.
